29-Year-Old Defenseman Signs with the Capitals

NHL

Matt Roy, a defenseman, gained popularity in the NHL free agency market due to his defensive dependability and consistent play. Roy has made a name for himself on the blue line over his career as a consistent player who can contribute in any circumstance and stop opponents from scoring. Roy played in 81 games with the Los Angeles Kings last season, tallying five goals, 20 assists, and 25 points. Roy contributed modest offensive results in the Kings' first-round playoff series against the Edmonton Oilers, registering two assists in five playoff games. Roy's skill set and experience made him a desirable addition to clubs seeking to add defensive depth as he reached free agency this offseason. Now, the Washington Capitals have signed Roy to a six-year deal for $34.5 million.

Prior to entering the NHL, the 29-year-old played his collegiate career at Michigan Tech University, where he spent three seasons from 2014 to 2017. With Michigan Tech, Roy recorded 12 goals, 43 assists, and 55 points in 115 games played. Following his junior season with the Huskies, the Los Angeles Kings signed Roy to a two-year, entry-level contract in 2017. During his rookie season, Roy would spend the year with the Kings’ AHL affiliate the Ontario Reign, where Roy tallied four goals and 13 assists during the 2017-18 season. On February 16th, 2019, Roy would make his NHL debut with the Kings against the Boston Bruins. In his six seasons with the Kings, Roy scored 24 goals, 82 assists, and 106 points in 369 games played.

Since joining the NHL, Roy has gained a reputation for being a dependable and consistent blue liner. Roy has been an anchor for the Kings' defense, whether it is by stopping shots, sabotaging opportunities, or making astute moves with the puck. He was an invaluable addition to the Kings because of his ability to play a solid defensive game and contribute offensively periodically when called upon. Roy's addition to the Capitals’ lineup means that the Capitals will have a dynamic defenseman going into next season who will have an instant effect on their blue line and offer consistency and dependability in all circumstances.
