Three Replacement Options for the All Star First Baseman
The Mets and Pete Alonso appear to be at a point in time where they are resorting to other options. Alonso appears to want a long-term deal while they are opposed to that idea as they have built this team through the farm system and free agency. Whilst a majority of the bigger names on the market reached deals elsewhere. With time dwindling, here are three options the Mets could look for to bolster their current lineup.
JD Davis
The Mets could make a potential reunion with the 32-year-old JD Davis. Davis was last with the Mets in 2022. He wasn’t the greatest for them but did provide some pop in their lineup, slashing 49 home runs in his four years with the Mets. The Mets could use Davis’ ability to play both corners of the infield to complement Mark Vientos. Davis could serve as a veteran presence for this very young and coming Mets lineup.
Alex Bregman
Probably one of the best names remaining on the market, Alex Bregman has been linked to the Mets for a little bit now as a target. With Vientos probably moving to first, Bregman could be a great guy to have at the other corner. Bregman is coming off a gold glove season and is a two-time all-star. Putting another bat behind Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor would help out as Bregman has put up 20+ HR and at least 75 RBIs in the past three seasons. While it isn’t likely, adding Bregman would put them in World Series contention.
Justin Turner
Another guy who has spent some time with the organization previously is Justin Turner. After spending four years with them from 2010-2013, Turner is in the last years and could potentially retire. Lacking playing time in the field during the latter half of his career, Turner could provide a veteran presence like Davis. Turner could be used to give the young guns a day off in the field here and there. Reuniting with Turner might not be the best idea, but definitely not the worst.
