49ers Star Wide Receiver Traded

NFL

The San Francisco 49ers have come to an agreement with the Washington Commanders. The two teams made the decision as of today. In that decision, the 49ers agreed to send their current standout wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a fifth-round pick. The deal cannot be processed until the new league year begins on March 12th, and a lot goes into it.

In this deal, Washington is taking on the remainder of Samuels’ contract and will pay him his full $17.55 million salary for the 2025 season. Samuel had one year left on his contract in San Francisco. There were many talks of how this trade was going to work out. Defensive tackle Johnathan Allen was a part of the trade discussion between both Commanders and 49ers earlier this week. They made the decision not to include Allen in this deal and to keep him where he is with Washington.

Samuel had also requested a trade earlier in February. He was ready to move on, but the Niners weren’t. However, after much talk, they finally concluded that it was time to let him go and that his time in San Francisco was over. They need to spend time rebuilding their franchise after making this trade. San Francisco is on the hook for $31,550,012 in dead money on its 2025 salary cap with him being traded.

The Commanders will definitely benefit from having Samuel added to their rosters. They added a brand-new weapon for star quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Commanders will have more talent to work with than they did last season, and with the addition of this wide receiver, they’ll be better equipped to take on bigger challenges. With six years of experience in the league, he brings the productivity and veteran presence they’ve been looking for, making him a valuable asset to their offense.

He was selected in the 2019 draft, and Samuel instantly hit the scene on the field. He was put to work to prove that he could be great for any team that he played for. In his first six seasons, Samuel has 4,792 yards receiving and 1,143 yards rushing. In the last four years, this wide receiver rushed for 958 yards and scored 17 touchdowns while catching 244 passes for 3,599 yards and 18 touchdowns. A rather large upgrade that the Commanders need. He dominated back in 2021, nearly carrying the 49ers offense to the Super Bowl that year. He had 1,770 scrimmage yards and 14 total touchdowns. The Niners came up short in the NFC championship against the Los Angeles Rams.

Samuel is joining a team that fully understands his talents. The Commanders also benefit from the familiarity of former 49ers assistant head coach and running backs coach Anthony Lynn, who was with San Francisco in 2022-23. His presence provides valuable insight into what Samuel brings to the team. With this addition, the Commanders have a strong foundation to build on and high expectations for the upcoming season.
