76ers Star Center Sidelined for Season
Today on social media, the Philadelphia 76ers made an announcement that shakes up their already chaotic season. This announcement is regarding Joel Embiid and his left knee. He has been struggling in large part due to ongoing issues with his left knee. He has only played in 19 games this season and 39 last season. His extensive history is notable, especially given his incredible efforts throughout his tenure when healthy. Here is how the social media statement reads.
"The Philadelphia 76ers and Joel Embiid have been consulting with top specialists regarding ongoing issues with his left knee. After further evaluation, it has been determined that he is medically unable to play and will miss the remainder of the season to focus on treatment and rehabilitation. We are working with medical experts to determine the exact treatment plan and will update media when we have more information. The team and specialists will continue working with Joel to ensure the best path forward for his long-term health and performance."
This decision shakes up the 76ers’ season, the team’s future, and Joel Embiid’s future. The 76ers are currently 20-38 and are two-and-a-half wins away from the final Play-In Tournament spot in the Eastern Conference. Given the recent statement, however, Philadelphia’s current championship odds sit on FanDuel at +100,000. These are the lowest mathematically possible odds, and are one of 11 NBA teams given these odds. This also affects Embiid’s future and the team’s future, given Joel’s current contract runs until 2028, and a player option for the 2028-29 season.
Joel Embiid has had many accomplishments during his lengthy tenure in Philadelphia, the only NBA team he has played for. Embiid is a seven-time all-star, a five-time All-NBA selection, a three-time All-Defensive selection, a two-time scoring leader, and the 2022-23 NBA MVP. He has led the 76ers to seven playoff appearances, with a long list of teammates throughout the years. Historically, there are many examples of NBA big men like Embiid who were forced into early retirement due to recurring injuries, similar to what has plagued Embiid’s career. The most notable examples include Brad Daugherty, Andrew Bynum, and Yao Ming, who retired at 28, 26, and 30 years old, respectively.
As such, it is entirely possible Joel Embiid, who turns 31 in March, retires fairly soon. If this is the case, he leaves behind a complicated legacy with plenty of achievements despite injuries, challenges, and a lack of championships. Many on social media are heartbroken about this recent update. They acknowledge Joel Embiid being one of the most talented NBA players of this era, and of all time, yet have various what-if questions wondering what would happen if Embiid stayed healthier or played for different management. In any case, this update is sure to change Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers forever.
