76ers Star Guard Receives Positive News Regarding Injury

NBA

Philadelphia 76ers star guard Tyrese Maxey hasn’t played since March 3rd against the Portland Trail Blazers, dealing with back and hand issues. Maxey was dealing with a finger injury while playing against Portland and put up five points on two-of-13 shooting from the floor in 23 minutes of action. However, during the third quarter of the 119-102 loss to the Trail Blazers, Maxey suffered a back injury and was removed from the game. The young star hasn’t stepped on the court since then and has missed the last nine games, including the Sixers’ most recent contest, a 133-100 loss in Oklahoma City to the Thunder. However, it now looks like Philadelphia could get Maxey back to close out the regular season, not that it would mean that much anyway.

It was reported yesterday that Maxey participated in a workout ahead of the 76ers’ matchup against Oklahoma City. It doesn’t give an exact timetable on when Maxey could potentially return, but the fact that he traveled with Philly on this road trip and is staying with the team is a good sign. The loss to Oklahoma City was the Sixers’ third game of a six-game road stand. Philadelphia will travel to San Antonio to play the Victor Wembanyama-less Spurs on Friday, then head to Atlanta to play the Hawks on Sunday before closing out the road trip in New Orleans on Monday. Maxey will likely continue to at least work out with the team, and the fact he’s present on the road trip could prove positive down the road.

Philadelphia has already shut down Paul George and Joel Embiid for the season, so there’s no reason to rush their young star back as this lost season for the 76ers continues. In his absence, Quentin Grimes has been playing like one of the best guards in the NBA as of late and could be in line for a big payday this offseason, whether it’s from Philly or another franchise. Following the 33-point loss to the Thunder, Philadelphia has now lost eight of its last 10 games, dropping to 23-46 on the season, good for 13th place in the Eastern Conference. The Sixers have the fifth-worst record in the NBA, so as the franchise continues to tank, the likelihood of it keeping its first-round pick in this year’s NBA Draft keeps rising.
