A Recap of the Giants’ Disastrous Week One

NFL

It could have been a better day at MetLife Stadium. The New York Football Giants made their debut against the Minnesota Vikings. The Giants had their fair share of issues on and off the field, with more occurring on the field. The final score of this game was 28-6, marking a challenging start for this New York Team. However, the Giants are determined to overcome these challenges and improve their performance in the upcoming games.

The quarterback situation could have been better. Daniel Jones took the field today and did not get the start he and everyone else hoped for. He was making his regular season debut after being out last year with an ACL tear. In this game, he threw 22 for 42 on his attempts, averaging 4.4 yards/completion. Jones was irregular with all of his throws. Jones threw two interceptions throughout the game, resulting in touchdowns for the Vikings. One of those was a pick-six that landed in the hands of linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel. After his performance on the field today, there are many questions, the most prominent being whether Jones should be benched and let Tommy DeVito step back in or even Drew Lock, who is coming off the injury list, be the starting quarterback. The Giants, however, are committed to Jones and are actively working on building a more robust offensive line around him. They don’t want to draft a quarterback, and Jones said he has no thoughts about being replaced. Jones is still under the $160 million contract signed two years ago, which also plays into this scenario.

The offensive line did not help Jones much, either. They could not stop the Vikings from getting by them, which resulted in sacks and tackles for the starting quarterback today. However, the ball was getting moved down the field. The Giants were able to make it down the field into the red zone. However, they were unable to score any touchdowns. Malik Nabers and Wan’Dale Robinson were often seen having the ball passed to them. However, the Giants had at least five drops when Jones passed the ball to his receivers. Nabers did a great job, though, when he was able to get his hands on the ball. His performance was one of the only positive takeaways from this game.

The defensive line could have been on their best foot today, too. It was one poor decision after another. Kayvon Thibodeaux was quiet during this week's game. He didn’t record any tackles. He had one facemask penalty called on him, and after that, fans didn’t see much action from his end of things. The defensive line did not pressure the Vikings’ offensive line or Sam Darnold. Dexter Lawrence was the only one who was on fire today, making stops where they needed to be made. The defensive line was not impressive in today’s game.

The Giants need to step up before next Sunday's game. This week, head coach Brian Daboll has a lot of work cut out to make them look sharp. Hopefully, the Giants will take a turn for the better. They will take on rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders in Week Two. This was indeed a disastrous start for the new season.
