Analyzing Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell’s Ceiling

NFL

Going into the 2024 season, there was optimism surrounding the Eagles’ first two picks in the draft prior. Many believed Cooper DeJean was a first-round talent, and the Eagles were fortunate to be able to select him in the second round. Quinyon Mitchell was a sought-after prospect, but nobody could have predicted the tear Mitchell has been on. As the season has progressed, Mitchell continues to make his statement in the Defensive Rookie of the Year conversation. He has arguably been the top corner in the league this year, holding the receivers he has placed to an average of less than 30 yards per game. Is there a fair placement of a ceiling to put on the Eagles’ developing rookies?

Cooper DeJean looks to be a home run pick, as his versatility truly opens up the Eagles’ defense. He has the speed and coverage skills to stay in the slot while also showing exceptional open-field tackling. According to PFF, he is ranked among the best slot corners in football. With veteran Darius Slay likely in his last year with the Eagles, Mitchell seems to be ready to fill in his shoes. He has exceptional ball skills that make it tough for any receiver against him. He allows little to no separation of quick releases, and he has a swagger that the Eagles have not seen this early in from a rookie at a coveted position.

DeJean is also the perfect compliment to Mitchell, as they have already fed off each other’s energy early on and quickly become fan favorites. Although there have been little to no growing pains remarkably, they are sure to come. Hopefully, they come sooner rather than later, so the tandem will be in full attack mode come playoff time. Their true identities will be determined when the best receivers on the playoff squads are across them. Regarding their ceilings, it is scary that it is genuinely too early to tell. They are both still raw in terms of experience. What’s evident in their preparation and maturity will keep both players in Philadelphia for years to come. The Eagles have a special duo in the secondary that has immense potential.
