Bears Draft Michigan Tight End with Tenth Pick
The Chicago Bears had the tenth pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and with lots of speculation on trading up, the Bears would stay put. They would select Michigan Tight End, Colston Loveland. The six-foot-five Wolverine would have an impressive three seasons in Michigan, totaling 1,466 receiving yards, 11 touchdowns, and winning a Rose Bowl in 2023. Loveland became a leader for the Wolverines and played a large part in their success over the past three years. Loveland would also prove himself as a good run blocker, providing Chicago with much-needed run support.
This pick would come as a shock to many fans in Chicago and a lot of disappointed Bears fans. The rumors circling Chicago in the days leading up to the draft pointed to the Bears trading up and getting now Las Vegas Raiders Running Back, Ashton Jeanty. If the Bears were unable to find a trade to move up for Jeanty, many fans expected the pick to go towards the offensive line or defensive line, both sides being rebuilt in Chicago. Many around the league find Loveland not being the number one tight end in the draft, with that spot going to Tyler Warren, who would be picked 14th by the Indianapolis Colts. While fans scratch their heads in the Windy City, there are reasons for the shocking selection that suits Bears head coach Ben Johnson.
One of the biggest weapons Ben Johnson had in his time with the Detroit Lions was Tight End Sam LaPorta. He became a staple with the Lions' offense and someone Johnson could always rely on to get yards after the catch. Loveland’s play style is very similar to that of LaPorta’s, a quick, explosive tight end who can catch or block. While the Bears already have Cole Kmet starting at the position, Johnson could be looking at a one-two-punch combo at tight end to weaken opposing defenses. This also adds another weapon to the arsenal of quarterback Caleb Williams, who is looking for a big jump in his second season. The Bears will continue their selections tomorrow night in Round Two.
