Bills Trade for Five-Time Pro Bowl Wide Receiver
The Buffalo Bills made headlines as the second team to trade for a big-name wide receiver on Tuesday. Just hours after divisional rival New York Jets traded for Davante Adams, the Bills acquired Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns. It has been weeks of the Bills Mafia calling for the team to add to the wide receiver room, and they finally did. Cooper looks to fill the Stefon Diggs-shaped hole on this offense since Buffalo traded him to the Houston Texans in the offseason. After starting off 4-2 with a lackluster group of receiving options, this addition should make Josh Allen’s offense even scarier to play against.
Cooper Finds Fourth NFL Home
Despite playing on a Browns’ offense that has been abysmal, Cooper has looked good. Over the past four weeks, Cooper has put together 19 receptions for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Also, this is the third time that Cooper has been traded in his career. After playing his first three and a half seasons on the Raiders, he was traded to the Cowboys in 2018 for a first-round pick. Then, after three years, Dallas traded Cooper to the Browns in March 2022. Despite being a journeyman at the wide receiver position, Cooper has been impressive on every team he’s been on. The Miami, Florida native has earned a Pro Bowl on every team he’s been on, averaging 4.7 receptions per game and 66.7 receiving yards per game in his career.
Compensation Package
In what seems like a major win for Buffalo, the team traded a 2025 third-round pick and a 2026 seventh-round pick for Cooper and a 2025 sixth-round pick. With this trade, the Bills no longer have a third-round pick, but they still have their first and two second-round picks; Houston traded Minnesota’s second-round pick to Buffalo in the Diggs trade. By getting Cleveland’s sixth-rounder, the Bills now have three picks in the sixth round for the third time since 2021. Perhaps the best part of the trade compensation-wise is the deal that Buffalo gets Cooper on. The 30-year-old wideout will play on the team with an $807,000 cap hit.
