Brandon Nimmo Walks it Off, Mets Top Braves 4-3

MLB

Brandon Nimmo gave New York Mets fans what they needed on Sunday night; a sense of excitement. This hasn’t been an outstanding year for the Mets, as they currently hold a record of 19-20 and got off to a 0-5 start. Obviously, an 0-5 start doesn’t mean that much with how many games are played in an MLB season, but it still wasn’t pretty. They’ve picked themselves up solidly, however, as they are almost at .500. On Sunday, they took down the 24-13 Atlanta Braves by a score of 4-3. The Braves are definitely one of the better teams in all of Major League Baseball but sit in second place in the National League East division behind the red-hot 28-13 Philadelphia Phillies. It doesn’t really seem like the Mets have a real shot at the division, but you never know, and this game was certainly a morale booster for them.

This win helped the Mets avoid a three-game sweep, as they lost their previous two games versus the Braves, one by a score of 4-2 on Friday, and the other by a score of 4-1 on Saturday. The Mets were heavily helped today by Pete Alonso, who hit an RBI single in the bottom of the third to drive in DJ Stewart and tie the game at one, as well as a double in the bottom of the sixth inning to drive in Francisco Lindor to tie the game at two. In the bottom of the 8th, Braves’ slugger Marcell Ozuna hit an RBI single to break the 2-2 tie and give the Braves a 3-2 lead. This all set up the bottom of the 9th, where Jeff McNeil got things started, placing a drag bunt down that resulted in a single. Nimmo later stepped up to the plate with one out in the 9th and drove a 3-2 cutter over the fence in right-center field.

The Mets look to take this momentum into their upcoming series against the Phillies, which won’t be easy but it would be huge to pick up some wins at home against an elite team. This heroic comeback will hopefully be the spark of something big for the Mets, as they look to defy all odds this season. Can the Mets enter the playoff conversation?
