Can Ranger Suárez Achieve a 20-Win Season?
Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Ranger Suárez picked up his first loss of the season almost two months into the regular season on Sunday night against the Colorado Rockies. Suárez is certainly eying that National League Cy Young Award as he’s been lights out in basically every start on the mound this season. Besides former all-stars like Chris Sale, and Tyler Glasnow, the Phillies seven-year pitcher certainly has to be an early frontrunner for the prestigious NL Cy Young Award. Currently, with a 9-1 record, could Suárez achieve his first 20-win season of his career?
Back in 2022, Philadelphia’s seven-year pitcher picked up a career-high of 10 wins. Suárez has a chance to tie that record two months into the season during his next start. Through 11 starts in 2024, the 28-year-old Phillies pitcher has been on fire with a 9-1 record. In 72 innings pitched, he has put up the second-best ERA in the Majors at 1.75. He has given up 17 runs on 44 hits while striking out 77 batters. Ranger’s first loss against the Rockies was certainly his worst start this season, but his best thus far was also against Colorado back on April 16th. Suárez pitched all nine innings allowing just seven hits while striking out eight batters during a 5-0 win. On May 21st during a 5-2 victory over the defending champion Texas Rangers, Suárez put up a season-high of 10 strikeouts. The way the Phillies’ offense has been cooking, and how nasty the 28-year-old pitcher has been on the mound, Suárez could certainly achieve a 20-win season.
The Phillies have been dangerous, currently with the best record in the Majors at 38-18. Suárez has certainly been a key contributor to this team’s success. Philadelphia is currently five games ahead of the second-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East division. Atlanta, who just lost their best player in Ronald Acuña Jr. may experience some ups and downs now that their MVP is on the shelves. Suárez could be the next National League Cy Young winner if he continues to dominate, and the Phillies hold the best record in the National League or even the Majors. Can Ranger Suárez achieve a 20-win season? Could he become the next winner of the National League Cy Young Award?
