Can the Pitt Panthers Bounce Back After a Disappointing Season? A Look Ahead to the 2024 Football Team
Pittsburgh - As the 2024 season begins, the Pitt Panthers football team, under the seasoned leadership of head coach Pat Narduzzi, is ready to continue its tradition of toughness and competitiveness in the ACC. Entering his 10th season, Narduzzi has established a strong defensive identity for the Panthers, while the offense is a work in progress. With a challenging schedule ahead, including key conference matchups, Pitt is focused on making another strong run to be bowl eligible. The team’s depth, experience, and determination have fans and analysts optimistic about the Panthers' chances to make a significant impact this season.
Offense Preview:
As of now, Nate Yarnell will remain the starting quarterback for the Pitt Panthers. According to 247sports, he was the lowest-rated starting quarterback in the ACC. New offensive coordinator, Kade Bell, is expected to bring a revamped offense. His spread/no-huddle system was among the best in the FCS during his time at Western Carolina. If the offense can meet expectations, they will have a much improved season.
Defense Preview:
The Pitt defense only has two returning starters, which could be a good thing as their defense ranked 73rd in points allowed and 27th in sacks. A fresh start could be what they need to get back to what they used to be. Losing three NFL-caliber corners in the secondary is tough to replace, so the secondary will be crucial in determining whether or not they have a bounce-back season. A few key additions from the transfer portal will also help create pressure and force turnovers.
Top Returning Players:
Rodney Hammond Jr. RB - Hammond Jr. admittedly wanted to leave Pitt after going 3-9 last season but came to his senses and stayed. He didn’t want his lasting memory as a Panther to be a 3-9 season that represents one of the worst in recent years.
Gavin Bartholomew TE - Similar to Hammond, Bartholomew didn’t want to leave Pitt after having such a horrible season. After only catching 18 passes last year, he should be in for a much heavier dosage of targets. He has the upside of being one of the best tight ends in the ACC.
Brandon George LB - George did end up entering the transfer portal but decided to return back to Pitt. The constant contact from linebackers coach Ryan Manalac reminded him that this was his home.
Top Incoming Transfers:
Chief Borders DL - The edge rusher from Nebraska has committed to play for the Panthers this season. He adds much needed depth on the defensive line, and the former four-star will produce right away. He also has one of the coolest names in the college football landscape.
Top Incoming Freshman:
Jeremiah Marcelin LB - Marcelin seems to be just one of those guys that you know loves contact. As a freshman, he already is 6’2 235 lbs. Due to multiple injuries in the linebacker core from last season, Marcelin has a chance to get some playing time.
Top Departures:
Dayon Hayes DL - Hayes led the Panthers in tackles for loss with 10.5 last season. He has decided to enter the portal and go play for Lincoln Riley at USC. The former Pitt star has left the program after four seasons.
Bub Means WR - Means the safety valve for the Panthers' offense. No matter who was in at QB, Means could be relied upon to catch the football. He is with the New Orleans Saints now and will be missed.
Under-the-Radar Players:
Donovan McMillon DB - McMillion might have had the quietest 100+ tackle season out of anyone in the country. Given the nature of his position, it’s even more impressive that he reached this margin. Expect his name to be talked about more this season.
Konata Mumpfield WR - Mumpfield has put up back-to-back 500+ receiving yard seasons. With Bub Means in the NFL now, Mumpfield could be the new go-to guy to get those tough yards.
Win Total Prediction:
The Pitt Panthers 2024 season win total is listed as 5.5. I like Narduzzi at the helm, but I don’t see the Panthers exceeding their win total. There are too many questions on the offensive side of the ball that need to be answered. They do not have the ACC’s most difficult schedule by any means, but it is also not going to be a cakewalk. They should win in Week One against Kent State but then lose their next two games. Youngstown State should be considered a win, and then it’s a while before another likely win hits on their schedule. Four of their conference games are against a true test against Clemson, at SMU, at North Carolina, and at Louisville. Therefore, I am going to take the under on the win total as I only see the Panthers winning four games this season.
