Can the Texans Fix Their O-Line Problem Come Playoff Time?
The Houston Texans have emerged as one of the NFL’s most surprising contenders these past two seasons. It’s largely been due to the brilliance of quarterback C.J. Stroud. However, a glaring issue continues to hinder their offense: an injury-riddled and underperforming offensive line. As the playoffs approach, questions remain about whether this unit can stabilize in time to support Houston’s postseason aspirations.
Injuries Piling Up
The Texans’ offensive line has been a revolving door all season, with multiple starters sidelined due to injuries. Laremy Tunsil, the team’s Pro Bowl left tackle, has battled nagging injuries, while guard Juice Scruggs missed significant time. These absences have forced Houston to rely on backups and practice squad players, leading to inconsistent protection for Stroud and diminished run-blocking efficiency. When healthy, Tunsil and right tackle Tytus Howard anchor a line capable of dominating opposing pass rushers. However, without continuity, the group, led by Joe Mixon, has struggled to provide Stroud the time needed to execute downfield throws or create lanes for the Texans' running game.
Subpar Play Holding Back the Offense
Houston’s offensive line issues have directly impacted its ability to replicate last season's explosiveness. The Texans currently rank among the league's bottom half in rushing yards per game, limiting their offensive versatility. Although noticeably Stroud has struggled and been in a sophomore slump, he has managed to create winning drives despite being under constant pressure. Still, against elite playoff defenses like the Kansas City Chiefs or Baltimore Ravens, the line's struggles could become a fatal flaw.
Playoff Implications
For the Texans to compete in the postseason, they must find ways to mask their offensive line deficiencies. Whether through quick passes, extra blockers, or adjustments in the run game, offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik will need to get creative. If Houston’s line cannot improve, their playoff run may end prematurely. The Texans' postseason hopes depend on more than just C.J. Stroud’s talent. Fixing their offensive line problem could be the difference between a deep playoff run and an early exit.
