Carter Coughlin Cut Impacts the Giants
Roster Moves are being made all over the place. The New York Football Giants have been very busy making their roster moves before this weekend's first game of the season. The Giants made a few cuts. One of the bigger ones done as of Thursday evening was cutting Linebacker Carter Coughlin. The Giants have been looking to free up space to see if they could add someone new to their roster for the rest of the season.
Coughlin was one of three picks the Giants made in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft. He had made a career for himself before ever playing for the team. He spent his college days playing on the Minnesota team. Initially, he wanted to play on the defensive line as a regular linebacker but eventually found he did better with special teams. He was a significant contributor to the Giants' unique defensive line.
Last year, Coughlin made things happen for this team. He played about 20 percent of the defensive snaps. He notched over 16 tackles in his career with the special teams last season. His stats have been high for his previous two seasons with New York. Coughlin recorded 41 career and 31 solo tackles, with two for a loss. He started in 55 games with two starts. He did a lot for the Giants while on the playing field. He played more snaps than anyone, a total of 397, more than any other Giant has.
The Giants don’t have any corresponding moves being made at the moment. However, there is a chance they may be looking to add a return specialist to their roster this coming week. Coughlin will not be entirely off of the Giants team altogether. However, he will be moved to the practice squad for the rest of the Giants season.
Now that Coughlin has been moved, the Giants have one open roster spot. The problem is that the Giants need more men on their practice squad. That said, the Giants will likely make cuts from their practice squad in the coming weeks to free up more space. This will significantly impact the Giants for the season because the Veteran will not be able to help the Giants make the stops they need to despite having a nearly solid defensive line. Coughlin was a big piece of their team. The Giants will debut for the new season on Sunday at one p.m. against the Minnesota Vikings. More roster moves from the offensive and defensive sides will likely be made by then.
