Chicago Bears Hire Offensive Coach to Fill Vacant Head Coach Position
The Chicago Bears are currently in the midst of their rebuild. Today they are focused on the coaching staff and later in the season, they will touch base with the rest of the team as to what they are going to do. They are in the midst of finishing a deal to hire the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, as this Chicago team's next head coach. They have been having trouble filling the position this season. They fired their former head coach Matt Eberflus and filled the position with an interim head coach in December with Thomas Brown.
The Bears are really getting ready to move up in the league. They have been having a hard time trying to find the right guy to replace their vacant head coaching position and now they finally have gotten the right one. The Bears had interviewed 17 candidates in total, including three in-person interviews. They had talked to former head coaches Washington Commanders Ron Rivera, Tennessee State Head Coach Eddie George, and the former head coach of the Dallas Cowboys Mike McCarthy.
Johnson just came off a huge season with the Detroit Lions who finished the season with a historical record of 15-3. They received the Bye Week and went to the Divisional Round of the playoffs but were ultimately eliminated by the Washington Commanders. The Lions had the league's second-best offensive line this season and they were averaging out to 409.5 yards per game. They also had the second-best passing offense with 263.2 yards per game and rushed for 146.4 per game, good for coming up at sixth in the league.
Johnson had done some great work with Jared Goff. This season Goff passed the ball for 4,629 yards, and 37 touchdowns. A remarkable area for Johnson to put his quarterback in for each play. He has also been lauded for the boost of Lions Running Back Jahmyr Gibbs. Gibbs had nearly 2,000 all-purpose yards, and combined touchdowns this season. All credited to Johnson who put this team together and really made this happen.
There should be nothing but greatness coming out of his new position. The Bears can make better decisions moving forward. They will also have a new mindset that will help change a lot of things around. If he could turn this offensive line around for Detroit, then there should be no reason as to why the Bears shouldn’t do much better this coming season.
