Cincinnati Reds Set a New Season-High with 13 Runs in Their Win over the Rockies

MLB

Last night, the Cincinnati Reds dived into a three-game series at Coors Field against the Colorado Rockies. Since May 27th, and until June 30th, the Reds will face off against multiple divisional rivals as well as a bunch of teams with losing records, the Rockies being one of those teams, as they were once on a defining winning streak that no one expected. Still, since that undefining winning streak, they cannot find a way to boost themselves to that .500 mark. Cincinnati scored in five straight innings accumulating 11 runs before a two-run home run at the top of the ninth propelled the Reds to a 13-3 victory. The Reds have now won seven of their last 10 ball games.

During the bottom of the first inning, Rockies first baseman Elehuris Montero got the first run of the game across by hitting an RBI single into center field. A half inning later, Cincinnati’s first baseman Spencer Steer scored an RBI after knocking into a double play, however, this tied the game up at one run apiece. At the top of the third inning, Reds promising shortstop Elly De La Cruz ripped an RBI double into the left-center field gap. The next batter, third baseman Jeimer Candelario obliterated a two-run homer to right field, giving Cincinnati a 4-1 lead. In the bottom half of the third, Rockies second baseman Brendan Rodgers crushed a solo home run to left-center field. A few batters later, Colorado’s catcher Jacob Stallings recorded an RBI single to center field making it a one-run deficit for the Rockies.

At the top of the fourth, Reds outfielder Will Benson smashed a two-run triple to the right field wall. Just one batter later, Reds center fielder TJ Friedl hit an RBI single to right field, as Cincinnati was now up 7-3. During the top of the fifth, Reds right fielder Jake Fraley hit an RBI groundout. A few batters later, Will Benson hit a sacrifice fly to give Cincinnati a 9-3 lead. Spencer Steer lined a two-run single to left field, and in the top of the ninth, Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson crushed a two-run home run to right field to give Cincinnati a 13-3 lead and eventually the win. This 18-hit victory marks the most hits in a game by the Reds since May 26th, 2023, and is tied for third-most since the 2020 regular season.

Reds starting pitcher Andrew Abbott pitched six innings allowing three runs on seven hits, and a walk while striking out six batters. Will Benson finished the game with three RBIs while Tyler Stephenson and Jeimer Candelario had two RBIs apiece. Rockies starting pitcher Ryan Feltner pitched four and one third innings allowing eight runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts. Colorado reliever Angel Chivilli made his MLB debut and became the youngest player to make his debut this season.
