College Football Hall of Fame Candidates Announced
On Monday, the National Football Foundation announced the College Football Hall of Fame candidates. One notable candidate is former Pitt star defensive lineman Aaron Donald. Donald won ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, as well as winning other awards such as the Lombardi Award and the Outland Trophy. He had 28 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and four forced fumbles in his senior campaign for ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
Some other candidates include a former Heisman Trophy winner and a runner-up. Alabama’s Mark Ingram won the Heisman Trophy in 2009. Ingram ran for over 1,600 yards and 17 touchdowns in the year he won the Heisman Trophy. Notre Dame’s Manti Te'o was the Heisman Trophy runner-up in 2012. Teo recorded 113 tackles and notched seven interceptions in his senior campaign for the Heisman Trophy.
Two college coaches - Alabama’s Nick Saban and Ohio State’s Urban Meyer, headline the coaches that were selected as candidates. Saban had a record of 292-71-1 as head coach. He won seven National Championships and was named AP College Football Coach of the Year twice in 2003 and 2008. Meyer had a record of 187-32 as head coach. He won three National Championships and was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year twice in 2003 and 2004. Along, with winning the MAC Coach of the Year in 2001. Meyer is eligible for the ballot after being three years removed from coaching. Despite retiring in the last year, Saban is eligible for the ballot because he meets the criteria of being over 70 years old.
