Dallas Head Coach Set to Hit Free Agency

NFL

Things just took a huge turn in Dallas today for the Cowboys. Their head coach Mike McCarthy is set to his free agency as of Tuesday afternoon after the Cowboys and he failed to meet in negotiations on a new contract. After five years with this team, McCarthy is set and looking onto moving on somewhere else. They have the rights to continue talks until midnight, however Dallas has not been making any moves to show that they want to keep him. They have made gestures in showing interest in keeping him by blocking him from having any talks in potential interest in him from other teams such as the Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints. Both teams currently have vacant head coaching positions.

His original deal with Dallas was for eight million per season over the last five years. He originally signed this contract deal in 2020. He may be up for a raise if he moves on to another team or if he continues with Dallas after coming off a 7-10 record for the 2024 season. In those five years he has recorded a total of 49-35 for the Dallas Cowboys all together. McCarthy has really tried to turn things around and even took them to the Wild Card Round twice and to the Divisional Round back in 2022.

There are possibilities that there have not been negotiable offers because the Cowboys have given him a non negotiable deal. It’s McCarthys choice as to what he wants to do. It’s also up to McCathy agent, Don Yee, to make the Cowboys nervous about the position. Now that he will be hitting free agency, McCarthy can pretty much do whatever he wants to and talk to any one of the teams in the NFL that are currently looking for head coaches.

McCarthy has spoken with the owner and general manager Jerry Jones and vice president Stephen Jones at least several times last week. Most discussions were focused on what happened in 2024 and going through the season ending protocol. There have been no fallouts between the two sides. However, the Cowboys may also be waiting until the absolute last minute to do something, they did it with several members of the team such as Dak Prescott, Micah Parson, and CeeDee Lamb. Most likely this will be how the head coaching position will go too.

If the Cowboys did make an offer to McCarthy with a message of no negotiations before the deal expires. McCarthy will have to decide to take it or leave it. He could take the pending offer and end up with nothing or he can wait until after free agency when he interviews elsewhere and realizes that there is no other place for him to really go. It’s truly on the Cowboys and them stopping him from making his return to being the head coach of this Dallas team.
