Does Travis Kelce’s Extension Mean the Chiefs Dynasty Will Continue?

NFL

With the Kansas City Chiefs coming off back-to-back Super Bowl Championships, the Chiefs have locked up one of their primary pieces from those championship teams by extending Travis Kelce’s contract for two more years until 2027 for $34.25 million. If Kelce plays out his entire new contract, he will be 38 years old by the end of the 2027 season. This extension could give the Chiefs four more seasons of their dynamic duo of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. So can the Chiefs continue to win more Super Bowls even with Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones all signed to expensive deals?

When it comes to winning Super Bowls, it has become more evident in today’s league that teams need a top-tier quarterback. The Chiefs have exactly that in Patrick Mahomes who is undoubtedly the best quarterback in the league right now. Then, teams must also sign players who perform at the very top of their position to justify paying them a hefty portion of the salary cap. Travis Kelce and Chris Jones are among the top three players at their position, so paying them monster salaries is justified with the impact they make on the field. Finally, teams must draft well to bring in young talent on cheap salaries to fill gaps in their team. The Chiefs have done this beautifully by drafting young talents like linebacker Nick Bolten, halfback Isiah Pacheco, cornerback Trent McDuffie, and wide receiver Rashee Rice. All of these guys are still on their rookie contracts allowing the Chiefs to pay their stars while getting a bargain from their young talent. All of this has accumulated to the Chiefs winning multiple Super Bowls over the past few years.

The Chiefs give themselves a great shot at continued success by extending their seven-time All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce for a few more years given his tremendous output with Mahomes in big games. Kelce has more than proven his worth in the playoffs amassing 612 yards and seven touchdowns in the seven total playoff games that have ended in two Super Bowl wins for the Chiefs over these past two years. However, if the Chiefs are to continue their winning ways, they must not only get massive production from the stars they are paying big money to but also continue to build their team through the draft because they won’t be able to keep all the talent that is currently in the building due to salary cap restrictions down the road.
