Dolphins’ Playoff Hopes: Slim, but Still Alive

NFL

The Miami Dolphins’ postseason dreams are hanging by a thread, but hope remains. With three games left, Miami needs to win out and receive help from other teams to have a shot at the playoffs. Here’s a breakdown of what needs to happen for the Dolphins to keep their season alive. The path to the playoffs starts with the Dolphins defeating their remaining opponents. The task kicks off this Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium against the San Francisco 49ers, a team plagued by injuries. Missing key players like running back Christian McCaffrey, left tackle Trent Williams, and possibly defensive star Nick Bosa, the 49ers present an opportunity for Miami to gain momentum.

After San Francisco, the Dolphins face the Cleveland Browns, who are without star running back Nick Chubb and are navigating quarterback challenges. The regular season ends against the New York Jets, potentially in Aaron Rodgers' final game with the team, wrapping up a disappointing campaign for New York. Winning these games is critical, but even that won’t be enough without external help. To secure a playoff berth with nine wins, the Dolphins need two of four outcomes to play out.

Indianapolis Colts must lose at least one of their final three games versus the Titans, the Giants, and the Jaguars. Baltimore Ravens must lose all three of their remaining games vs. Texans, Chiefs, and Browns. Los Angeles Chargers must lose both of their final games at the Patriots and Raiders. Denver Broncos must lose both of their final games at Bengals, vs. Chiefs. The Dolphins own the tiebreaker over most AFC teams with the same record due to a superior conference record. However, the Colts, who beat Miami earlier this season, would edge the Dolphins in a head-to-head tie.

While the Dolphins’ path is clear, it’s far from easy. The Denver Broncos face tough matchups against Cincinnati and Kansas City, though the Chiefs could rest starters in Week 18 if they’ve clinched the AFC’s top seed. The Baltimore Ravens have a tough slate with games against Houston, Kansas City, and Cleveland. The Chargers have the easiest schedule, taking on the struggling Patriots and Raiders. The Colts close out with a manageable schedule, but a single loss would eliminate them from contention.

Despite the uphill battle, Miami has advantages. They have the NFL’s fourth-weakest remaining schedule, and their final opponents are all dealing with significant challenges. If the Dolphins can handle their business, they’ll improve their playoff odds to 37%. Winning out and getting the necessary help could boost those odds to 70%. For now, fans should focus on two things, cheering for Miami and rooting for the Colts and Broncos to stumble. The road to the playoffs may be narrow, but it isn’t closed. As long as there’s hope, the Dolphins will fight to keep their season alive.
