Drake Maye Really Needs an O-Line

NFL

The New England Patriots have found a glimmer of hope in rookie quarterback Drake Maye, who was named the starter in Week Six. Taking over for Jacoby Brissett, Maye has shown flashes of his talent, but it’s evident that he needs more support to succeed. The offensive line has been a significant issue, one that was apparent even during the preseason. Without a strong front line, it’s challenging for any quarterback to thrive, and Maye is no exception.

In their recent game against the Colts, Maye had his best performance of the season, completing 24 of 30 passes for 238 yards, and a touchdown while having the play of the game where he ran 41 yards from his total of 59. He also had an unfortunate interception where the ball bounced off Hunter Henry’s stomach and the Colts defender just grabbed it. Despite the heartbreaking loss, Maye's performance showcased his potential, but the defense also played a role in the disappointing outcome giving Jonathan Taylor 96 yards off of 25 carries. As well as two missed field goals from Joey Slye, with the last one being a 68-yard attempt. Slye probably would have never had to try to make a field goal that long if Maye had a better offensive line for better opportunities.

With a current record of 3-10, it was known that this season would be a rebuilding year. Head Coach Jerod Mayo has the challenging task of developing Maye while also addressing the team's weaknesses. A new receiving corps could certainly help as well, but a solid offensive line is essential for any quarterback to flourish. The progress Maye could make with better protection might transform him from a promising rookie into a standout player.

In his eight starts, Maye has thrown for just under 1,700 yards, with a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 11:8. While these numbers indicate he has room for improvement, they also highlight his potential when given the right tools. The Patriots’ future hinges on their ability to provide Maye with the support he needs. If they improve the offensive line, it could pave the way for a brighter era in New England football.
