Eagles Sneak by Chiefs on Monday Night

NFL

Another Monday night football matchup was on television last night, closing week eleven with an incredible game! The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 21-17 on the road. The Eagles add another win to their overall record, now sitting at 9-1 on the season with the best record not only in their NFC East division but the entire NFL. The Chiefs, while they may have lost this one, still sit comfortably at the top of their AFC West division with a 7-3 record. What Kansas City should not sit comfortably with however, is the fact that they had a ten-point lead in this game going into halftime and were unable to score any points in the second half and let the Eagles come back and win this game. Let’s take a look at how Philadelphia got this win.

The Kansas City Chiefs were able to put the first points of the game on the board at the end of their second drive as quarterback Patrick Mahomes connected with wide receiver Justin Watson for a 3-yard touchdown to make the score of the game 7-0 Kansas City after kicker Harrison Butker made the extra point. However, the Chiefs would not hold the lead long as Eagles running back D’Andre Swift ran into the endzone for a 4-yard touchdown score to make the score of the game 7-7 after kicker Jake Elliott made the extra point. Both team's offenses would make mistakes in the second quarter as Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts threw an interception, a pass intended for wide receiver A.J. Brown, into the hands of Chiefs cornerback L’Jarius Sneed. The Chiefs would soon give the ball back to the Eagles as Mahomes threw an interception, a pass intended for wide receiver Justin Watson, into the hands of Philadelphia cornerback Kevin Byard. While neither team could convert points off of the others’ turnovers, the Chiefs would score on their next drive as Mahomes found tight end Travis Kelce open for a 4-yard touchdown to make the score of the game 14-7. The Chiefs would score once more on their last drive before halftime as Butker knocked down a 43-yard field goal to make the score of the game 17-7 as both squads headed into the locker room.

The first points by either side in the second half would not be scored until nearly four minutes were left in the third quarter as Hurts ran into the endzone for a 10-yard touchdown to make the score of the game 17-14. The Eagles' defense would be able to get the ball back very soon for their offense as Kelce fumbled on the Chiefs' next drive. The fumble was forced by Eagles cornerback Bradley Roby and recovered by Philadephia linebacker Nicholas Morrow. The Eagles would score their last points of the night a few drives later as Hurts ran in the endzone for a 1-yard touchdown to give the Eagles their first lead of the game 21-17. The Chiefs would have one last chance to win the game late in the fourth quarter, but after Mahomes' deep pass, intended for wide receiver Justin Watson, fell incomplete the game was over.

Hurts completed fourteen of his twenty-two attempted passes in the game, finishing having passed for 150 passing yards and an interception. Hurts also had two rushing touchdowns in the game. D’Andre Swift had twelve carries 76 yards and a touchdown. Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith had six receptions for 99 yards. Mahomes went twenty-four for forty-three with 177 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in the game. Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco had nineteen carries for 89 yards. Wide receiver Justin Watson had five catches for 53 yards and a touchdown and tight end Travis Kelce had seven catches for 44 yards and a touchdown.

Next week during week twelve, Philadelphia will face off against the Buffalo Bills at home and Kansas City will head to Las Vegas to take on their divisional rival Raiders.
