Eight-Time Pro Bowl Tackle Set to Retire
Long-time Dallas Cowboy and former New York Jet Tyron Smith is set to sign a one-day contract with the Cowboys and then retire. For the majority of his career, Smith had been plagued by injuries. This past season was no different as he was only able to suit up for 10 of 17 games in his one and only season with the New York Jets. Prior to coming to the Jets, he was named to five All-Pro and eight Pro Bowl teams while playing for the Dallas Cowboys.
Last offseason the eight-time Pro Bowl tackle signed with the New York Jets on an incentive-heavy one-year deal for six and a half million. With the potential to reach $20 million if he hits certain playing time benchmarks. Tyron Smith was part of a failed effort to rebuild the offensive line by former general manager Joe Douglas. Which included three new starters for this 5-12 football team. Smith was part of a big swing-and-miss on an attempt to rebuild a team on the fly. He didn’t fully live up to his expectations as he was eventually usurped in the starting lineup by rookie Olu Fashanu.
Tyron Smith hasn’t started more than 13 games since the 2015 NFL season. This is due to him becoming incredibly injury-prone in the latter half of his career. Despite that since 2015 never playing more than 13 games he has made five Pro Bowl and two All-Pro teams in six separate seasons over the course of the last nine years. Now with being set to retire, does those accolades put him in the Hall of Fame, regardless of those nagging injuries? If not going to Canton, will he head to the Cowboys Ring of Honor?
