Established Veteran Max Domi Commits to Four-Year Extension with the Maple Leafs

NHL

Center Max Domi, who missed much of the 2022–2023 season with the Dallas Stars, playing in just 20 games, returned to his usual strong form after spending the 2023–24 season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Domi had a significant contribution to the Maple Leafs' offensive throughout his 80 games played, tallying nine goals, 38 assists, 47 points, and one power-play goal. Domi continued to be productive in the Maple Leafs' first-round playoff series against the Boston Bruins, recording one goal, three assists, and four points in seven games. Entering free agency for the third time in his career, Domi was looking to find a team that had expectations of making a deep playoff run next season. According to The Athletic’s Chris Johnston, the Maple Leafs have re-signed Domi to a four-year extension, worth $3.75 million AAV.

The 29-year-old Domi began his amateur hockey career in 2011 with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. Domi played in 244 games for the OHL, scoring 126 goals, 205 assists, and 331 points. After playing for the Knights for his first two seasons, in which he scored 60 goals, Domi became a sought-after commodity for NHL clubs in the run-up to the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. The Arizona Coyotes selected him in the first round and signed him to an entry-level three-year deal. Domi made a swift adjustment to the professional level during his debut NHL season, and with linemate Anthony Duclair, they went on to become one of the league's most formidable lines. Domi would finish his rookie season with 18 goals, 34 assists, 52 points, and three power-play goals in 81 games played.

Domi has played for seven teams in his nine-year career, including the Coyotes, Canadiens, Blue Jackets, Hurricanes, Blackhawks, Stars, and Maple Leafs. Throughout his career, Domi has proven his attacking prowess, frequently setting up plays that both fans and analysts find astounding and scoring goals. He creates scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates, which makes him a vital player on the rink. His ability and vision are capable of changing the course of a game. The Maple Leafs hope that having Domi return to their team will have a big influence on their efforts to qualify for the postseason as they start the 2024–25 campaign.
