Former National League MVP Signs with the Yankees
Former Arizona Diamondbacks and St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt agreed to a one-year 12.5 million dollar deal with the New York Yankees today. This news does not come as much of a surprise, as Goldschmidt was rumored to leave the Cardinals as they begin to focus on youth development in 2025. Despite being one of the league’s older infielders at age 37, the former MVP, five-time Silver Slugger, and four-time Golden Glove winner still has a lot to offer. This acquisition will also help out the Yankees in the locker room, as Goldschmidt has been known to be a great mentor to other players.
Paul Goldschmidt spent six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals after being traded from the Diamondbacks after the 2018 season and is now on the move once more. Goldschmidt had a great tenure with the Cardinals, winning an MVP in 2022 but struggled mightily compared to previous years in 2024. Despite turning things around towards the end of the season, the 2024 campaign might have cost Goldschmidt some extra cash. Slashing a career-low .245 batting average, .302 on-base percentage, and .414 slugging percentage the former MVP will look to improve on last year's numbers with his new team.
Despite reaching many career lows in 2024, Goldschmidt still has so much to offer the Yankees. Goldschmidt can provide steady defense at first base and has the ability to put together quality at-bats as a designated hitter. Racking up 147 hits in 154 games, 33 doubles, 22 home runs, and 11 stolen bases without getting caught, the veteran still has enough tools to help contribute to success at the major league level. The Yankees will look to capitalize on that success this season as they look to build a stronger roster in preparation for a deep run in 2025.
