Former No. One Draft Pick Possibly the Next Giants’ QB?

NFL

There have been issues all over the NFL league this past week. The one that kicked things off this NFL week was the benching of Bryce Young on the Carolina Panthers. Following that, there was a second discussion regarding the Giants' starting quarterback, Daniel Jones, possibly getting benched during the season. Things are not looking great, but the Giants have been getting ready to toss their hat into the ring to find a new starting quarterback for this team. If not for this season, then definitely the next.

With Young benched on the Panthers, this opens a new door for teams. There is an intriguing option now available on the trade market. Young can come to any one of the teams at a discounted price, and the Giants may be interested in him. However, the question remains whether the Giants should trade for Young. Many fans have been saying it’s time to move on from the current starting quarterback. They have had six seasons of disappointment from their current starting quarterback, only two decent ones out of all. The year they made it to the first round of the playoffs and last season when Tommy DeVito stepped in to take over for injured Jones and Tyrod Taylor at the time.

Many have said that the Giants should go for him. If the Giants acquire him, then the Panthers will take the 2026 fifth-round pick. It’s definitely something to look into for this team. They have to see if they can make it happen financially. The Giants acquired Brian Burns, who played for the Carolina team last season.

In a recent poll, many fans had voted that they had wanted the Giants to go for him. They want to see a change made. Young has had some pretty decent plays at times while playing for the Panthers. He came out of Alabama looking pretty sharp. He was the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Since then, playing in Carolina has really downed his career.

There were fewer people who were against him coming to the Giants. He hasn’t had the best start. He is 2-16 and he has had more interceptions than he has touchdowns. Sometimes it’s not always the quarterback's fault but there is a possibility that a new team may make the difference if the Giants do decide to go with him. However, others have stated that Young is a worse quarterback than Jones, who is the former number sixth overall pick from the 2019 NFL Draft.

If they continue on with Jones, the fan base will begin to turn more on him. Eventually resulting in the fan base also turning on head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. It’s still an option for the Giants to pick Young. It would still make sense for the Giants to go for the trade even though Young has not lived up to the number one overall pick from his draft year. Looking into the salary, Young is affordable for the Giants. He is only in the second year of his rookie contract. His caps are $8.6 million for this season, $10.3 million in 2025, and then $12 million in 2026. This is much more affordable than it would be to have Jones continue with them.

The other side of things is that Young is still considered pretty new in the league. The 23-year-old has not dealt with injuries such as Jones had. To make things a little better, if they do take him on he will get to play with Malik Nabers. It would be a great team-up under the Daboll offensive line.

Nonetheless, as of right now, the Giants will be sticking with Jones. If the wins don’t start coming in there will be even bigger issues. A trade for Young would at least get things moving for the team. Hopefully, it would be a game changer. It would be something to see after the 2024 season too. The Giants and the Panthers will face off in Germany in Week 10. It would be interesting to think that if Schoen decided to make this trade, Young would be on the other side. It would be a very wild notation and Young just needs a brand new start somewhere else, possibly in New York.
