Four MLB Teams That Have Been Disappointing Two Weeks Into the New Season
A week and a half ago, on March 27th, the MLB 2025 season began with an electric energy in the air. Through the first nine/ten games of the season, there have been some teams that have exceeded expectations like the 8-2 Texas Rangers, 8-1 San Francisco Giants, and the 8-2 San Diego Padres. On the other hand, there have been a few teams that have gotten off to either a disappointing or a bad start in general. While there’s plenty of baseball to be played, can these teams finally get out the gate, or will they be stuck on the outside looking in throughout the entire season? It will be interesting to see what happens, but let’s take a look at four teams, two from the American League and two from the National League that have been a letdown thus far.
Baltimore Orioles
For the past two seasons, the Baltimore Orioles have shown the AL East, as well as the entire league, that they’re on the come-up. They won the AL East pennant in 2023 and clinched a Wild Card spot last season. Baltimore was eliminated in the ALDS in 2023 and in the Wild Card Wound last season. So far through 10 games, the O’s have not been as dominant as in seasons past. They split their four-game Opening Day series against the Toronto Blue Jays, then they lost two out of three games to both the Boston Red Sox and the Kansas City Royals. In three separate matchups against all three of their opponents thus far, the O’s gave up eight runs which all led to losses. The Orioles start a three-game series in Arizona against the Diamondbacks. Even with the O’s on the road, hopefully, the pitching will be there and the bats will be effective.
Seattle Mariners
In 2023 and 2024, the Seattle Mariners were close to clinching a playoff spot, however, in both seasons they were one of the final teams to be eliminated from playoff contention. Two seasons ago, the Mariners were two games out from clinching Wild Card positioning, then last season Seattle was three and a half games out from winning the AL West division. In 2025, this team hasn’t looked the greatest, especially with a 3-7 record. During their four-game Opening Day series, they split the series at two games a piece with the Sacramento Athletics. Next, they lost two out of three games to the Detroit Tigers before finally being swept by the Giants in San Francisco. Seattle faces two division rivals in their next two series, a three-game set with the Houston Astros and a four-game series with the Texas Rangers. If the Mariners can’t take advantage and get some wins against some crucial division rivals, this could be a long season for a team that had so many high hopes a season ago.
Atlanta Braves
For the past six seasons, the Atlanta Braves have won the NL East pennant five times. Last season, they battled with the Philadelphia Phillies all season long for that top spot within the division, but it would ultimately be the Phillies who won the NL East. The Braves were knocked out in the Wild Card Round by the San Diego Padres. It seems this playoff loss from last season has pushed the team’s confidence to start this new season. To start the 2025 MLB regular season off, the Braves faced the Padres in a rematch of last year’s Wild Card Round. San Diego made a statement by sweeping Atlanta, winning all four games. Next, the Braves would be swept in their three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Then, Atlanta split a two-game series with the Miami Marlins. This Braves team faces their biggest rival from last season in their next series. If the Atlanta Braves can’t salvage a series win or at least one win within this next series, their season may be as good as done for and the streak of being in the postseason could come to an end. The panic button may be closer and closer to hitting.
Arizona Diamondbacks
While they arguably play in one of the toughest divisions in baseball, the Arizona Diamondbacks don’t nearly look as good as some of their NL West rivals. At 5-5, the D-Backs are sitting in fourth place within the NL West, behind the 8-2 San Diego Padres, 9-2 Los Angeles Dodgers, and 8-1 San Francisco Giants. Arizona split their first four games during their Opening Day series against the Chicago Cubs. They defeated the New York Yankees in two out of three games in the Bronx before losing two of their next three games against the Washington Nationals. Last season, the D-Backs won 89 games and still did not clinch the postseason. It’s an absolute must that this team wins as many early games as they can before it’s too late come September. Their next series against the Baltimore Orioles is extremely crucial as both teams are vying for the win. Can this team muster up what it takes or will this team that made the World Series two seasons ago miss the postseason once again?
