Four Players Who Need to Step Up Against the Chiefs in the Divisional Round

NFL

The Houston Texans will face a tall order in their divisional-round matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Just a few weeks ago, the two teams met in the same environment, where the Chiefs came out on top, defeating the Texans in a game that highlighted their high-powered offense and ability to capitalize on mistakes. This time, however, the stakes are higher, and the environment is far more hostile. The Texans will need to deliver their best performance in a much tougher matchup if they are to secure a victory and advance in their playoff journey.

The Chiefs’ less explosive yet consistent offense led by Patrick Mahomes will cause Houston’s defense to step up, particularly in the pass rush. The key to slowing down Mahomes and keeping the game within reach will be generating consistent pressure on the quarterback. Against the Chargers in the wild-card round, the Texans' defense dominated, forcing four interceptions, including a pick-six. That same defensive intensity will be needed to disrupt Mahomes’ rhythm and keep the Chiefs’ offense from running wild. Four players in particular will need to make big plays for the Texans to have a chance to win the rematch.

Danielle Hunter - Edge Rusher

Danielle Hunter has been one of the most productive pass rushers in the league this season, and his ability to disrupt the opposing quarterback will be paramount against Mahomes. Hunter’s speed and power off the edge could be crucial in forcing Mahomes to move off his spot and make decisions under pressure. The Chiefs’ offensive line, while solid, has shown vulnerabilities this season, and Hunter’s ability to exploit those weaknesses could be the key to breaking through and getting to Mahomes. Houston’s defense will need to collapse the pocket from the outside, and Hunter’s ability to stay relentless will go a long way in keeping Mahomes uncomfortable throughout the game.

Will Anderson – Edge Rusher

Right alongside Hunter, Will Anderson has proven to be a force on the Texans' defensive front. As one of the top young pass rushers in the league, Anderson’s speed and football IQ have allowed him to generate consistent pressure throughout the season. Like Hunter, Anderson will be tasked with containing Mahomes and making it difficult for him to extend plays with his legs. If Anderson can get to Mahomes early and often, it will disrupt the timing of Kansas City’s offense and force Mahomes into some uncharacteristic mistakes. Much like the game against the Chargers, where the Texans' defense capitalized on creating pressure, Anderson will need to deliver big plays, whether it’s sacking Mahomes or forcing quick, inaccurate throws.

C.J. Stroud – Quarterback

C.J. Stroud will also be under the microscope in this matchup. Stroud's performance has been inconsistent this season, and while he's shown flashes of brilliance, he will need to step up in a big way against the Chiefs' defense. Kansas City is susceptible to giving up big plays, and Stroud will need to take advantage of any opportunities. While the Texans will rely on their defense to set the tone, Stroud’s ability to move the ball and stay efficient will be critical. He needs to take care of the football and capitalize on the occasional opportunity to strike downfield to players like Nico Collins. In a hostile environment like Arrowhead, Stroud’s poise and decision-making will be crucial to keep the offense on track.

Joe Mixon – Running Back

Although the focus will largely be on the defense and pass rush, Joe Mixon will also have a significant role to play in the Texans' strategy. A strong performance from Mixon on the ground could help control the clock, allowing the Texans’ defense to rest and limiting Mahomes' chances to strike. Mixon has proven to be a reliable workhorse, and in a game where ball control is critical, he could be the key to wearing down the Chiefs’ defensive front and opening up play-action opportunities for Stroud. Mixon’s ability to gain tough yards and move the chains could take some pressure off the passing game and keep the defense guessing.

The Texans will need to execute their game plan to near perfection in this much more difficult environment. Against the Chargers, it was their pass rush and defensive playmaking that allowed them to emerge victorious. Against the Chiefs, that same formula—along with key contributions from Stroud and Mixon—could be the recipe for success. With Hunter and Anderson leading the charge on defense and Stroud and Mixon executing on offense, the Texans could shock the world with an upset win in Arrowhead and continue their playoff run.
