Four-Time All-Star Signs 500 Million Dollar Extension
It was first announced by Ken Rosenthal that Blue Jays first baseman and four-time all-star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. signed a 14-year 500-million-dollar extension with the Toronto Blue Jays. This deal will certainly keep the two-time Silver Slugger in Toronto for the rest of his career. This news came after the Jays took a tough 2-1 loss and were swept in Queens by the New York Mets. With a massive extension now in place, Guerrero Jr. will look to keep Toronto in contention within the AL East division.
The four-time all-star has played in nine of the Blue Jays 10 games. In 35 at-bats, Guerrero Jr. has recorded four hits, along with bringing home four RBIs, with a .286 batting average. The 26-year-old has been walked four times and struck out nine times thus far. Guerrero Jr. will look to finally heat up and help this Jays team win some must-needed games early on in this season. So far, Toronto split their four-game Opening Day series with the Baltimore Orioles. Then, the Jays were able to sweep the Washington Nationals at home during their three-game series before being swept by the New York Mets this past weekend. During the series against the Mets, the two-time Silver Slugger went four for 12 at the plate, recording an RBI and two walks as well.
With this new deal, Guerrero Jr. becomes the third-highest-paid player in baseball behind Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani. This deal passes Aaron Judge’s nine-year 360-million-dollar contract with the New York Yankees. At just 26 years old, Vlad Jr. has been one of the best players the MLB has to offer. So far in his career, he’s been a Gold Glover, a four-time all-star, two-time Silver Slugger Award winner, led the MLB in home runs in 2021 while winning the Hank Aaron Award in the same year, as well as being nominated to the All-MLB First-Team in 2021, and 2024. With the Blue Jays shipping up to Boston to face the Red Sox, this will be a great test to show everyone that this deal isn’t a fluke and that Guerrero Jr. could bring Toronto a World Series championship if the pieces are all together. He’s the cornerstone of the franchise and will try and deliver on what could be a great season for the Blue Jays.
