Giants Reinforce Depth: What the Return of Their Backup QB Means for the Future
The Giants will have another year of their fan favorite quarterback, Tommy DeVito. Many fans were upset that he was no longer going to be wearing big blue in the backup quarterback position this coming season. However, the Giants offered him a one-year contract to stay in New York for another season. He became an exclusive rights free agent after finishing out last season, between him and Drew Lock in the starting position, when Daniel Jones had decided to part ways with the team. DeVito will not be able to talk to any other teams and will be able to be comfortable where he is right now.
The Giants officially have one quarterback on their roster and will be working on adding more in the next couple of weeks. DeVito may not be the starting quarterback but it at least gives the Giants something to work with. They will be spending the next period deciding whether to sign a veteran quarterback or drafting a brand new quarterback for the team. DeVito will only be the backup from now on despite how well he has done in the past and how much this backup quarterback has earned head coach Brian Daboll’s trust. He will continue to sit at number two.
A lot of what happened last season was not his fault. DeVito appeared in 12 games with eight starts over the past two seasons and six of them in his rookie year back in 2022. He recorded a record of 3-5 and a completion percentage of 65.3%, 1,358 passing yards, eight passing touchdowns, and three interceptions. He did not have the greatest offensive line during the last two seasons, which is why things didn’t go as well for him.
For the Giants, this means they at least can make something happen on the field. DeVito is no longer a rookie, and he can now identify his most reliable receivers to target. This is a good thing for New York because it means they're bringing guys in who already know what to do and how to get the wins that they need to forge ahead into next season. Even if they don’t have a starter at the moment, DeVito is still something. The Giants will still need more quarterbacks to fill out the position. Many fans want to see New York be active in this year's free agency and the 2025 NFL Draft. They can get anyone they want, but there will be a new face of the franchise in the Meadowlands.
