Houston Texans: Who Is Wide Receiver One?

NFL

The Houston Texans are in a situation that other NFL teams can only dream of having, with so many strong receivers on the team, the question is, who is the likely candidate for the wide receiver one? The wide receiver core is one of the strongest in the league, with the likes of Stefon Diggs fresh from Buffalo, Nico Collins coming off a strong year, and Tank Dell, the asked-for receiver by C.J. Stroud, you have a pretty tough debate in front of you. If we wanted to take it a step further we could throw in Mixon and talk about who will have the most yards, but in all seriousness, the Texans have a stacked offense this season. If we break down the Week One game, we can get a glimpse into who might be this season's star in the wide receiver role.

The first game against the Indianapolis Colts ended with a 29-27 victory for the Houston Texans with many plays being jaw-dropping moments such as Anthony Richardson’s two deep 50-yard drives. However, if we take a look at the stat sheet, we can look deeper into the wide receiver debate. Stefon Diggs only had six receptions and ran for 33 yards, which of the three in contention for wide receiver one, is the lowest. However, he caught both of the Texans passing touchdowns for the season opener, having been the only one of the three to log any form of touchdown completion. Tank Dell only had three receptions, yet he managed to push those yards to a total of 40 for the season opener. Lastly, Nico Collins, came out hot with a total of six receptions, which was the same as Diggs, and had a staggering 117 yards for the season opener. With all three putting up numbers that offset good and bad, it’s still tough to pinpoint who is the clear number one target.

The season is only beginning and we already have strong performances for the wide-receiving core trio. In terms of early review, Nico Collins is the clear go-to guy for consistent yardage, averaging 19.5 yards per reception. However, Stefon Diggs again holding both the receiving touchdowns for the Texans puts him in the running. The beauty of having three top-notch guys is that when Stroud must adapt, he has a large net of reliability. In addition, each receiver can find open space during those high-pressure situations, which to any quarterback, is a necessary trait. With the season underway, we will have to wait a few more games to see who comes out on top.
