How Will Patrick Mahomes’ Legacy Be Affected by This Super Bowl Loss?

NFL

In one of the most shocking out-comings in recent years, the Kansas City Chiefs have finally been beaten on the highest stage. After back-to-back years of Chiefs Kingdom dominance, the Eagles finally were able to get over their crushing Super Bowl loss a few years ago and claim the Lombardi Trophy once more. The first half of this Super Bowl was one of the most one-sided halves of football most fans will ever see. The Eagles’ defense put Patrick Mahomes and this offense into a blender and forced them into several horrible turnovers. With this loss being so decisive, what will this loss do to Patrick Mahomes’ legacy?

Firstly, Patrick Mahomes has put together a legendary career so far. He is only 29 years old and still has many years of prime football left in him. He has won three Super Bowls, two MVPs, and tons of other individual awards that certainly showcase the dominance he has had over the league. Although the Chiefs fell short in this Super Bowl, Mahomes still is one of only six other quarterbacks in NFL history to hoist three Lombardi Trophies. This Chiefs team is still young and although they may lose some pieces like Travis Kelce this offseason, this team should still be very competitive moving forward with Mahomes and a young defense to back him up.

Now that we have established that Mahomes can still build his legacy moving forward, we now have to talk about how devastating this loss was for his legacy. People remember big losses more than they do the wins. Even with great players like Josh Allen or Peyton Manning, most of the time they are remembered more for what they couldn’t accomplish than what they did. This isn’t just in football, but in all sports, as people still bring up that Michael Jordan never lost in the Finals while LeBron James has multiple times. The biggest problem for Mahomes is that he looked really bad in this game while the Eagles got out to an insurmountable lead to clinch the victory. Throwing two interceptions in the second quarter, while your team is already trailing, simply can’t happen. I understand that Mahomes was under constant pressure, but great players like Tom Brady always find a way to deal with it and still win. So with Mahomes’ Super Bowl record becoming 3-2 for his career, he still has time to build on his resume before his career is over, but this loss will certainly hurt him in every GOAT conversation moving forward.
