Improvements The Lions Need to Make Next Season

NFL

This season, the Lions were favored to win the Super Bowl. Last weekend they were eliminated from the playoffs. To say that the Lions need to make improvements this offseason would be a massive understatement. Jared Goff and the Lions' defense need to grow hugely this offseason. If the Lions cannot learn to improve, they will never make it close to the Super Bowl ever again.

Jared Goff

Most of the time Jared Goff played amazing this season. However, in key games, he threw too many interceptions for his team to succeed. In the Divisional round of the playoffs where the Lions were eliminated by the Commanders, Jared Goff threw three interceptions and only one touchdown. If a team is going to win games, the starting quarterback can’t be turning the ball over. Jared Goff needs to improve the way he takes care of the football.

Defense

The Lions’ defense had some amazing games this season. However, when they were not playing well, it destroyed the team. They gave up 34 points to a terrible 49ers team and 38 points against the Commanders when the Lions needed its defense most. When the Lions defense gave up 38 points to the Commanders in the Divisional round of the playoffs, it left a deficit that the offense could not come back from, resulting in a devastating loss to the Commanders. I say the Lions defense gave up 38 points instead of 45 because Jared Goff threw a pick-six. Another aspect of the defense is injuries. Players need to remain healthy next year if the Lions want a dominant defense. Aidan Hutchinson was one of Detroit’s best defensive weapons and he and many others were out. However, time should solve that problem as most of the injured stars should come back.

The Lions are not a perfect team, the playoffs exposed that fact. However, if they can improve their defense and their quarterback, then they can finally start to live up to the hype of being Super Bowl contenders. The Lions could be fantastic. They have to grow though before that can happen.
