Influential Run-Blocking Guard Signs with the Chargers

NFL

Mekhi Becton has been an integral piece to the Philadelphia Eagles offensive line since he signed with the team last season. Becton has played in 46 career games and has started in 45 games. Becton started his career with the New York Jets. Becton missed the entire 2022 season with a knee injury before bouncing back.

He played left guard and when he came to Philadelphia, he changed to right guard. The former first-round pick made a seamless transition, allowing only three sacks and committing four penalties. The 363-pound guard was called for only one hold and one false start all season. He played in 903 snaps, good for 88 percent. When the Eagles run screen-plays, Becton’s awareness is on point with his teammates. His timing and feel to run past the line of scrimmage as soon as the ball is passed to a skillset player is amazing. Becton’s ability to defend a variety of pass-rush moves makes it a nightmare to defend. He and the Eagles’ offensive line are terrific at communicating stunt rush and they do a great job passing it off. At his size, he has good speed to get out in the open field on zone run plays and simply get his body in front of a defender to take up grass.

Now, it has been reported by Adam Schefter that Becton and the Los Angeles Chargers have agreed to a two-year deal worth $20 million. Becton, at 363 pounds, has great mobility at his size. At his size, he’s outstanding in getting his hands in pass protection. When the Eagles go to their run-gap schemes, Becton has good discipline of when he has to let go. He’s quick to get to the second level when defenders attempt to attack the gaps. Becton is an excellent addition in terms of his unique size and championship experience as the Chargers look to reach the same heights next season.
