The Marlins Are on a Three Game Shutout Streak

MLB

The Miami Marlins just had one of the worst starts to a season that I can remember. They started the year with nine straight losses and have gone on to go 4-16 in their first 20 games of the season. Through 46 games played up to this point, they stand at 14-32.  The truth is every team goes through rough stretches, though this was particularly unexpected for the Marlins because they had a decently exciting 2023 season. They came into last season with expectations of being one of the lesser teams in baseball and managed to make a playoff run. They ended up losing to the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Wild Card Round, but nobody really expected them to be there in the first place. At the end of the day how the Marlins season shapes up will be interesting to watch, but they’ve been on a real hot streak recently, or, at least, their pitching has.

The Marlins staff has combined for three shutouts in the last three games they’ve played. They shut out the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday and Wednesday by scores of 1-0 and 2-0 respectively, taking two games of that three-game series, and shut out the New York Mets on Friday by a score of 8-0. Though neither of those teams are great, the Tigers have been playing decently this year (22-22), which makes that pretty impressive. Tuesday's game was won in the 10th inning, with eight scoreless innings from Ryan Weathers, and one each from Tanner Scott and A.J Puk. On Wednesday, Trevor Rogers threw five scoreless to get things started, and the game was finished with the help of four Marlins relievers, including Scott. Jesús Luzardo dominated through six innings on Friday and was relieved by three pitchers out of his bullpen, who collectively allowed one hit. These past three games have been a masterclass by the Marlins bullpen, which is definitely something for fans to be excited about.

Though things aren’t looking great this season, the Marlins now have something serious to be excited about. Though it was only a three-game stretch, the team’s pitching staff truly showed what they were capable of. This is the third time that the Marlins have completed this feat in franchise history, and the first in almost 20 years. It would sure be exciting if things could carry on to a four-day streak, and so on. We’ll just have to wait and see.
