Lions Beat Texans in Worst Performance of the Season: Key Takeaways

NFL

They say a win is a win. That’s an accurate statement. However, the Detroit Lions’ win last night was the ugliest win of the entire season. The offense had little to no production. This game had nothing to do with the Lions playing better than the Texans. This game had everything to do with the fact that the Texans played worse than the Lions. The Lions barely beat the Texans by a field goal in the last seconds of the game, making the score 26-23.

Key Takeaways

Jared Goff came into last night's game with four interceptions on the season. He left the field throwing five interceptions in one game. Jameson Williams came back from a suspension last night.  Jared Goff continuously tried to force the ball to him, which caused the interceptions. Jared Goff needs to learn to throw the ball away when his receivers are covered. This was a terrible performance by the entire offense. The running back duo that tends to dominate opponents, which consists of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, was held to 103 yards. On the passing side, Sam LaPorta had 66 yards and a touchdown. Amon-Ra St. Brown had 60 yards and a touchdown. The two players were able to step up in pivotal moments but overall the pass game was not good either. The defense had a great game. Carlton Davis III had two interceptions on C.J. Stroud. The only reason that the Lions were put in a position to win in the end was because of the defensive stops that caused punts.

What This Means

On paper, this win was great for the Lions. They now have eight wins and one loss and still lead the division. If they lost last night's game, then they would be tied with the Vikings in leading the division. This does seem positive, however, to win a game when a team plays that awful could cause false confidence in the team. The Detroit Lions may now think that they can play bad and still win football games. A Lions loss would have been a wake-up call. Instead, they were rewarded for playing terribly.

They say a win is a win. That’s an accurate statement. However, this win was nothing to be proud of. The offense had little to no production. The Lions did not play well. They just played well enough to win. The Lions will need to see this win as a loss if they want to get better. They will need to fix Jared Goff’s decision-making before the right team makes him pay.
