Lions, Goff Agree on Four-Year Contract Extension to Make Him the Second-Highest-Paid Quarterback

NFL

The Detroit Lions and starting quarterback Jared Goff have agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension, totaling $212 million and $170 million in guarantees, senior NFL insider Adam Schefter reported Monday via Instagram. The deal makes Goff the highest-paid Lion in franchise history, and the second-highest-paid quarterback on a per-year basis in the NFL.

Jared Goff was acquired from the Los Angeles Rams in a quarterback swap for Matthew Stafford and two first-round picks in 2021. Since finishing 3-13-1 in Goff's debut season, the Lions have completed back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2016 and 2017. Narrowly missing the playoffs in 2022, the Lions had one of its greatest seasons in franchise history, finishing 12-5 overall and earning a trip to the NFC Championship against the San Francisco 49ers. This year's championship run marks the team’s first playoff win since 1991.

Goff has accumulated 30,429 passing yards, and 185 passing touchdowns and holds a 66-50-1 quarterback record. Goff has two Pro Bowls entrenched underneath his name and was awarded the 2017 Most Improved Player award. 2018 was arguably Goff’s best season in the NFL, finishing with a career-high 4,688 passing yards, 32 passing touchdowns, and leading his former club to the Super Bowl versus a Tom Brady-led New England Patriots team.
