Logan Webb Shuts Down 19 Straight Batters

MLB

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Logan Webb put up a phenomenal outing last night in a 5-0 home win over last year’s National League champions, the Arizona Diamondbacks. Webb pitched seven scoreless innings, followed by Tyler Rogers, and Ryan Walker, making the Giants the first ballclub to shut down last year’s National League champions thus far in the early going of this regular season. The Giants starting pitcher went on to shut down 19 batters in a row, which set a new career high. Webb’s previous record of 16 batters retired in a row occurred at Coors Field on May 18th, 2022.

In the top of the first inning, both Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte both hit back-to-back singles. That would be the only real trouble Logan Webb had to face this entire game, as two force outs and a strikeout later, Webb would come out unscathed and went on to retire the next 16 batters in a row. During the bottom of the first inning, Giants first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to give San Francisco the first run of this ballgame. There would be no scoring for either team until the bottom of the eighth inning when pinch-hitter Wilmer Flores ripped a two-run double into left field. In the next at-bat, Giants right fielder Mike Yastrzemski knocked down a two-run single to give San Francisco a 5-0 lead and the eventual win.

Webb pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and a walk while striking out five batters in the win. Both Flores and Yastrzemski’s insurance runs were huge for the Giants to sustain their confidence and grab the win. Diamondbacks starting pitcher Ryne Nelson only pitched two innings as he left the game with a right elbow contusion. Logan Allen pitched in his place allowing one run on three hits, and a walk while striking out three in four and two third innings. Both teams are now 9-11, which ties these two teams for third place in the NL West division.
