Luis Arráez Has a Chance to Make History
Just a few days ago, the Miami Marlins traded second baseman Luis Arráez and cash considerations to the San Diego Padres in exchange for Dillon Head, Jakob Marsee, Nathan Martorella, and Woo-suk-Go. San Diego is currently 20-20, second in the NL West division, six and a half games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the top spot. Well, there might be a chance for the Padres to win the division, or they may end up with one of the three National League Wild Card spots. Regardless, now with a two-time batting champion in the lineup, the Padres offense just got a brand-new spark plug. Arráez has the opportunity to make history, becoming the first player in Major League history to win three batting titles with three different teams.
Back in 2022, Arráez won his first batting title with the Minnesota Twins as he held a .316 batting average. A year later with the Marlins, the second baseman’s batting average rose to .354. In 33 games played with Miami this season, the 27-year-old second baseman had 41 hits in 137 at-bats. Now, in five games with the Padres, Arráez has recorded eight hits in 20 at-bats. He currently has a .312 batting average which ranks 11th in the National League. In 2022, and 2023, Arráez smashed at least 150 hits or more, and it looks like he’s on pace to do the same thing again this season, as he has 49 hits in just a month and a half of regular season action. The former Twin and Marlin has a phenomenal shot at making history and achieving something no player has ever done before.
It’s still extremely early on in the regular season. Anything could happen. Averages can fall at a rapid pace, but no one expects Arráez numbers to dip. Nonetheless, at a lifetime batting average of .325, the Padres new second baseman will look to make history and cement himself in the history books. San Diego has gone 3-2 since acquiring Arráez. They must go on a winning stretch if they are to challenge Los Angeles for that top spot in the NL West. Coincidentally enough, the Padres will start a three-game series with the Dodgers in San Diego tonight. Can Luis Arráez make history?
