Luka Is Showing Everyone Why He Should Be This Year’s MVP

NBA

Just the other day, Dallas Mavericks star Luka Dončić went off dropping 73 points in a 148-143 win over the Atlanta Hawks. Yesterday in a 131-129 win over the Orlando Magic, Luka put up 45 points along with nine rebounds, 15 assists, and two steals. Dončić’s performance was the six time in NBA history a player has recorded 45 plus points and 15 more assists, Luka has done this twice now this season. He’s giving a run against every other NBA star for this year’s MVP Award. If he can make the Mavs a top four team in the West, he’ll certainly be the favorite next to Joel Embiid, Nikola Jokić, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Luka has played in 40 games for the Mavericks this season, as the team has compiled a 26-21 record. Averaging about 38 minutes on the court, Dončić is averaging nearly 35 points, nine rebounds, ten assists, a steal and a block a game. His best performance this season thus far was obviously his 73-point outing against the Hawks. That 73-point performance is the fourth most points scored in a single game, tying the likes of Wilt Chamberlain, and David Thompson. Luka Dončić’s season low is 16 points. He’s scored 40 or more nine times this season and has scored 30 or more 31 times. Luka has been the pinnacle star for the Mavericks since being drafted, and he’ll hope to get this team deep into the playoffs.

Dallas has a rough stretch ahead of them as they’ll play the Minnesota Timberwolves, Milwaukee Bucks, and the Philadelphia 76ers. If this Mavericks team can win at least two out of the three matches ahead of them, they’ll be in great shape to compete with the rest of the West for the time being. The Western Conference has shown why each regular season game matters, as one loss can make you on the verge of being on the outside looking in. Dallas currently sits in the seventh seed, and if the season were to end today, they would have to compete in the Play-In Tournament. Luka Dončić can certainly bring this team to the playoffs just by the load he’s been carrying by himself, but will it be tiresome enough to eliminate the Mavericks early on during the playoffs?
