Mets Control Brewers in Game One

MLB

After the Mets merely sneaked into the playoffs with a split of the doubleheader against the Braves on Monday, September 30th, they carried over their success with a commanding victory over Milwaukee. In what was assumed to be a marquee pitching matchup between Luis Severino and Freddy Peralta ended up being an offensive slugfest. Different players came up clutch for each side. Ultimately, the Mets came out on top 8-4 and look to carry it into the second game on Wednesday, October 2nd.

The Brewers opened up the scoring in the first inning with William Contreras scoring Brice Turang on an RBI single. After a walk to Willy Adames to load the bases, Rhys Hoskins was hit by a pitch to score another to put the Brewers up two. However, the Mets battled back with a Jesse Winker two-RBI triple to knot it up back at two, which was followed by a Starling Marte sacrifice fly to put the Mets up by one. The Brewers opened the scoring back up in the fourth inning with RBIs by both Jackson Chourio and William Contreras as the Brewers took the lead four to three. The Mets then again rallied from behind with two outs in the top of the fifth after Jose Iglesias had arguably the biggest hit of the night for the Mets with a head-first slide for an infield single to knot it up. Both Mark Vientos and J.D. Martinez had a pair of RBIs in the top of the fifth as well to open up the lead to eight to four. That was all the scoring as Severino went six for the Mets followed by Jose Butto with two innings and Ryne Stanek closing it down in the ninth.

The Brewers will need to figure out the Mets pitching quickly with Sean Manaea being the probable starter for the Mets in a win-or-go-home game for the Brewers. The Brewers have not decided on who will be given the baseball for tomorrow, but the pitching so far this season for the Brewers has been a rocky road. However, if the Brewers can attack Manaea, the Mets could be in trouble after a little bit of flustering in Game One. The Mets later responded with a six-run rally in the fifth inning. The winner of this series will go on to play the Phillies in a tough environment as what they call β€œRed October.”
