MLB Trade Deadline: Who’s Going to Sell?

MLB

With the MLB Trade Deadline, a little more than a week away, it’s one of the most fun parts of any MLB season besides the playoffs. Contending teams are looking to improve, fringe playoff teams are looking for a few extra pieces to make a late push, and teams’ way out of contention are looking to trade for some younger pieces to help their rebuild. Right around this time, it’s pretty easy to tell what teams are going to buy and what teams are going to sell. Before we look into teams looking to help bolster a playoff push, let’s look at teams that are going to be selling.

1. Chicago White Sox

The White Sox are in rough shape. They are 27-74 and an absurd 35.5 games back in the American League Central. That’s good for a .267%-win percentage, and you don’t need me to tell you that isn’t the best mark. They have guys who can make a huge difference on contending teams, including Luis Robert Jr., Garrett Crochet, and Tommy Pham. The White Sox have not been able to put it together in the Robert Jr. era, and it might finally be time for the two parties to part ways. Some teams that could possibly trade with Chicago are the New York Yankees, Houston Astros, or the Seattle Mariners.

2. Miami Marlins

Similar to the White Sox, the Marlins just have not been able to put everything together. This is surprising after a very promising 2023 season. However, the loss of star Sandy Alcántara really stopped a lot of momentum for Miami. The Marlins are 35-64 and 28 games back in the National League East. Two names swirling in trade talks are All-Star Tanner Scott and former MLB The Show cover athlete Jazz Chisholm. There are many teams in need of a centerfielder and a good relief pitcher, so it’s going to be interesting to see how the Marlins go at trading these two at the deadline if they trade them at all.

3. Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays are definitely the best team out of the three here, at 50-49, but they have openly discussed trading some of their top players. Randy Arozarena, Isaac Paredes, Yandy Díaz, and Zack Eflin among others have been slightly discussed by the front office. Multiple reports on “X” confirmed that Rays scouts were scouting some Yankees prospects, so there might be a potential deal there. Even though they still have a decent chance at making the playoffs, the Rays have been known for parting ways with their stars. Even though the Rays are a long shot, don’t be shocked if they haul at the deadline.
