Mohamed Salah’s Contract Troubles Amidst Record-Setting Season
Following Liverpool’s face-off with Tottenham over the weekend, Mohamed Salah set a new record for the English Premier League. Salah set up Dominik Szoboszlai in the first half for a beautiful goal to solidify the 3-1 score before heading into the locker rooms. Upon returning to the pitch, Salah seemed fired up for the second half, sending the ball to the back of the net twice at minutes 54 and 61 with ease. His final assist contribution was his assist to Luis Diaz, finalizing their 6-3 win. With his two goals and two assists on Sunday, Salah became the first player in the Premier League to make double digits in goals and assists before Christmas, with 15 goals and 11 assists in 16 matches. Amidst all his success, the question of Mohamed Salah’s contract, which ends in 2025, leaves fans troubled.
Not only is the Egyptian having a record-setting season, but also a new record for goal contributions in general, seeing as Salah’s 26 contributions before Christmas surpassed Alan Shearer’s 25 in 1994. Now becoming the fourth-highest goal scorer for Liverpool with 229 goals, Mo Salah’s success story this season is neverending, but his future with the team is in trouble. This season, the Egyptian player’s contributions have helped keep Liverpool at the top of the Premier League with 39 points. With this being the first season since Arne Slot became Liverpool’s manager, the team began on a new high with a fresh start, allowing Salah to thrive; however, his future with the team is still uncertain. Even after the 32-year-old player beat his previous personal records this season, Liverpool has not announced that a new contract is in the future for Salah.
At the end of the 2024-25 season, Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool contract ends, allowing him to leave the team, which could mean trouble for Liverpool if they cannot replace him. Previously, Mo Salah signed a three-year contract in 2022 to stay on the team until summer 2025. Starting January 1st, teams will be allowed to contact the player with contracts and deals for his transfer. Two teams have entered the race to sign the winger: Barcelona and Al Hilal. Both teams have expressed their desire for the player; however, the Saudi team has expressed their wish to sign the player for the 2025 Club World Cup. With his contract ending, Liverpool has not made any announcements to extend Mohamed Salah’s contract for a few more years, and with only a few days before teams start reaching out, the team needs to make a decision fast for their record-setting player.
