New York Mets Sweep New York Yankees in Subway Series
The New York Mets continued their impressive month of June with a sweep of the New York Yankees in the Subway Series. Citi Field was treated to the Mets putting up 21 runs in two games as they climb in the NL East. As for the Yankees, their starting pitchers struggled, and the bats went cold as they lost their fourth straight series. The first game of the series saw both teams combine for six home runs, resulting in a back-and-forth contest from start to finish. Yankees ace Gerrit Cole made his second season start after going four innings, giving up two runs, and retiring five batters in the 7-6 defeat to the Baltimore Orioles. This time, things did not go as well for Cole, as he had the worst-ever start of his 12-year career. He gave up six runs, four of them being homers, walked four batters, and struck out none in four innings.
After four innings, the Mets had a comfortable 6-0 lead, with Harrison Bader, Brandon Nimmo, and Mark Vientos going deep. Vientos had the best performance for the Mets, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two home runs. Juan Soto put the Yankees on the board with a solo shot in the top of the fifth, but the Mets continued their dominance at the plate, putting up three more runs to lead 9-1 after six. Austin Wells started a late resurgence for the Yankees with an RBI single in the top of the eighth. The Yankees then loaded the bases as Trent Grisham and Soto walked, as well as Wells’ aforementioned single. With two outs, upstepped Aaron Judge, who had a prime opportunity to cut the deficit to two runs. Judge did exactly what he’s best at, hitting a grand slam for his 29th home run of the season. The Yankees could not build off this and ultimately lost 9-7.
The Yankees did not do any better in the second game, losing 12-2 in what was a pitching disasterclass. Luis Gil, coming off his worst start of the season in the loss to the Orioles, struggled once again, giving up five runs in the first four innings. Francisco Alvarez went deep and hit an RBI double, while J.D. Martinez and Jeff McNeil also scored runners. Harrison Bader doubled to score a Met and gave his team a 7-0 lead after five innings. Judge, once again, was the lone star for the Yankees, hitting his 30th homer of the season off Danny Young. The Yankees bullpen continued their struggles, as Yoendrys Gomez gave up five runs off four hits. Tyrone Taylor slashed a homer, and Bader hit his second home run against his former team. The Yankees only mustered six hits, while the Mets doubled that number to score 12 runs. The Yankees will travel up north for a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays, while the Mets will stay in New York for a three-game series against the red-hot Houston Astros.
