Red Sox Third Baseman Breaks Team Record

MLB

After a 5-0 win over their division rivals Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox now have a 24-24 record, fourth in the American League East division, a half-game behind the third place 25-24 Rays, and eight and a half games behind the first place New York Yankees. During the 5-0 win, Boston’s third baseman Rafael Devers made team history when blasted a two-run home run during the top of the third inning. Devers became the first Red Sox to hit a home run in six straight games. The Red Sox third baseman became the first Major League player since Mike Trout to hit six home runs in six games. Trout did it back in September 2022. Can Devers continue this marvelous streak against the Rays during the second game of this three-game series?

Boston’s third baseman has played in 37 games thus far. In 141 at-bats, he’s put up 40 hits, 10 home runs, 23 runs batted in, with a .284 batting average. The two-time Silver Slugger started his home run frenzy on Wednesday, May 15th. During that time, he’s recorded six home runs with nine runs batted in. If Devers can hit a home run during the next two games, he will tie the Major League record of eight home runs in eight games. This ties him with the likes of Ken Griffey Jr., Don Mattingly, and Dale Long.  Tonight, the World Series champion third baseman will face Rays starting pitcher Zack Littell, in which Devers hit a home run on Littell back on the team’s loss.

Devers said, “Of course, I'm very proud to be in that conversation with Trout and in that position. Obviously, we know the type of superstar he is. He’s a future Hall of Famer and a superstar. To be on the same level with him is very nice.” Can Rafael Devers make history? We’ll just have to wait and if the Red Sox third baseman has what it takes!
