Russell Wilson Signing with Steelers When League Year Begins

NFL

On March 5th, the Denver Broncos announced they would be parting ways with quarterback Russell Wilson. Now just a few days before the NFL league year begins, it was announced that Wilson will sign a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Once the league year begins and Russell signs, the Broncos will wind up paying 38 million dollars of Wilson’s salary as he wears the Steelers’ signature black and gold this season. The nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback and the Steelers’ officials met and had mutual interest in a one-year deal.

This signing makes the quarterback situation for the Pittsburgh Steelers a whole lot more interesting. Wilson will now compete for the Steelers starting quarterback spot against Pittsburgh’s 2022 first-round pick quarterback Kenny Pickett. Quarterback Mason Rudolph played three games last season and will be entering free agency. Unless Wilson or Pickett get hurt, I don’t believe resigning or not resigning Rudolph will be a game-changer. During his career, Russell has a 2-0 record against Mike Tomlin’s Steelers with eight touchdowns and no interceptions thrown. Wilson also had 645 passing yards and a 147.1 passer rating.

Russell Wilson played 15 games with the Denver Broncos last season. During the 2023 season, he completed 66 percent of his passes and threw for 3,070 passing yards. Wilson had 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Russell has an opportunity to do what Aaron Rodgers did a year ago with the New York Jets, which is to come to a new city, and a new team with a completely new group of core players, and help the young guys get better each and every day. One of the biggest questions is how will this Pittsburgh franchise compete in a loaded AFC North Division.
