Should the Cowboys Be Worried About Messing Up in the First Round?

NFL

The Dallas Cowboys in recent years have had some struggles with their first-round selections. Time will tell on last year’s choice, Tyler Guyton, but it was an up-and-down year for him. Mazi Smith, who was picked two years ago, has received criticism for his little impact but has made strides to end the season last year; however, he still has to justify being worth the pick. Even with these two picks that may have Dallas fans worried about this year’s first-round pick, Dallas has proven to trust their choices.

History of the Round

Dallas, for the most part, since the 2010s and 2020s, has hit on the majority of their first-round picks. Notorious players like Tyron Smith, Travis Frederick, and Zack Martin have all been All-Pro players and have become Dallas legends in their time. In recent years, CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons, and Tyler Smith have also become All-Pro players for the Cowboys and will be the face of the franchise for years to come. With even more numbers to back the Cowboys’ front office, since 2010, their first-round picks have combined for a total of 29 first-team and second-team All-Pro selections. So, Dallas fans are safe to trust the front office heading into this draft.

Who to Draft?

Now the question will remain, who should Dallas draft with pick 12? Head coach Brian Schottenheimer has already hinted at the fact that they are planning to use their pick on the best player available. This could mean the Cowboys draft a skill player that does not seem to be the biggest need, like they did with Lamb in 2020. Stephen Jones has pointed out the fact that he wants to fill the void at wide receiver two and help Lamb. Matthew Golden or Tetairoa McMillan would be great choices if the Cowboys do decide to follow that route and draft a receiver. Trading back is also another option the Cowboys favor, and it might not be flashy, but a player like Kelvin Banks Jr., who is an impressive lineman from Texas, could even be the selection. Whatever the case may be, the Cowboys have shown their hit rate in the first round has been reliable.
