Should the Mets Re-Sign Pete Alonso?
With Pete Alonso entering a contract year and the Mets unsure of what they want to do with him, there will be some questions heading into this offseason on what the Mets should do with him. At the beginning of the season, Alonso wasn’t looking the brightest. Heading into the trade deadline, Alonso wasn’t doing so hot but frankly he has turned it around hitting his 31st home run of the year in the 7-2 victory last night against the Boston Red Sox. Alonso loves playing for the city of New York, loves the surrounding components of Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo as spark plugs and the co-leaders of the team, and ultimately just wants to be here. The question is do the Mets want him here? He has spent his first six years with the team and loves the spirit of New York as you can often tell with the emotion he plays with.
The question will be if the Mets do re-sign him, how much will it be for? Comparing him to some of the other first baseman around the league, Freddie Freeman definitely outperforms him, and Freeman is earning 27 million a year with the Dodgers. Comparing him to some of the divisional rivals, he has outplayed Matt Olson, who is earning 21 million a year, and recently converted first baseman Bryce Harper, who is making over 25 million a year. However, if the Mets choose to move on from Alonso, amongst the notable free agent first basemans are Christian Walker, who was off to a great start before missing time due to injury, and Ryan O’Hearn, a young guy with some pop in his bat.
I believe re-signing Pete Alonso should absolutely be in the Mets’ plans. I think there should be zero hesitation. However, I do think it depends on the money. If I was Steve Cohen writing the check, I would offer Alonso a six-year, $144 million-dollar contract to stay with the Mets. He took over the third spot in Mets franchise history in home runs in his sixth year in the league and still has a lot of time to play at just 29 years of age. Alonso is a leader for this team and can truly make a difference. While he has had his slumps, I do think signing Pete Alonso should be one of the priorities for the New York Mets this offseason.
