Struggling Center Signs with the Hurricanes

NHL

Following a 2023-24 season, which saw Tyson Jost struggle to produce consistently for the Buffalo Sabres with Jost managing only two goals, two assists, and four points in 31 games played. On December 28th, 2023, Jost was waived by the Sabres and would ultimately go unclaimed and returned to the Sabres’ AHL affiliate for the first time in five years. Entering free agency, Jost’s future was up in the air as his options appeared to be limited. However, it was announced recently that the Carolina Hurricanes have signed Jost to a one-year deal for $775,000. Now, Jost will have the opportunity to turn his career around heading into the 2024-25 season.

Prior to being drafted into the NHL, the eight-year center started his hockey career in the British Columbia Hockey League with the Penticton Vees in 2013. In the BCHL, Jost would develop into a productive goal scorer, as Jost recorded 20 or more goals in three of his four seasons in the league. In 2016-17, Jost decided to play NCAA Division I hockey with the North Dakota Fighting Sioux. Following his lone season with the Fighting Sioux, Jost would end up ending his collegiate career and would sign a three-year, entry-level contract with the Colorado Avalanche in 2017. During his six-year tenure with the Avalanche, Jost tallied 45 goals, 50 assists, and 103 points in 321 games played.

Over the past four seasons, Jost spent two seasons with both the Minnesota Wild and Buffalo Sabres as Jost started to see his offensive production dramatically decline. Since leaving the Avalanche, Jost has only scored 11 goals, 24 assists, and 35 points in 123 games. Despite his decrease in offensive production, Jost’s versatility has been one of his strongest assets, as he has demonstrated the ability to play effectively at the center and wing positions. As a 25-year-old, Jost’s development is still occurring, as he has encountered his fair share of up and down moments in the NHL. After signing with the Hurricanes, Jost’s work ethic and commitment to improving will become a valuable asset going into next season.
