Super Bowl LIX Champion Cornerback Signs to the Steelers
After helping the Philadelphia Eagles get their redemption Super Bowl victory against the Kansas City Chiefs, it would only be weeks later when the Eagles decided to release six-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay. Since being released by Philly, Slay has been looking for the best option to sign with and have the best chances of winning another Super Bowl championship. At 34 years old, he wants to use his veteran presence to teach the younger guys and make them a more vital part of the team. Today, it has been announced that the Super Bowl LIX champion cornerback signed a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Slay was drafted in the second round as the 36th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions. The six-time Pro Bowl cornerback spent the first seven years of his career in Detroit before being traded to the Eagles during the 2020 NFL Draft. He was a part of the Eagles team that made it to Super Bowl LVII but fell short to the Chiefs during their first Super Bowl matchup. Yet, Slay and the Eagles would get the last laugh in winning Super Bowl LIX.
In 14 games this past season, the Super Bowl LIX championship-winning cornerback recorded 49 combined tackles, 39 solo, and 10 assisted along with three tackles for a loss of yardage and 13 pass deflections. During the NFL Playoffs, he had 14 combined tackles, five pass deflections, and an interception. The 34-year-old had his best game in the NFC Divisional Round against the Rams where he had six combined tackles and three pass deflections. The Steelers know they have a special veteran presence in the locker room. They’ll hope to go the distance and Slay hopes to compete for one more Super Bowl championship.
